How to Disable Auto Refresh Tabs in Google Chrome

Google added a new feature to its Google Chrome browser. The name of the feature is ‘Discarded Tabs.’ This new feature automatically refreshes your web pages that are open from a long time into your browser. Chrome will analyze and detect from how long time a tab has remained open. This feature helps in keeping your browser and PC from getting slower.

How to disable ‘Discarded Tabs’ in Google Chrome

Auto-refreshing tabs is an experimental package of features, so you won’t find the disable option anywhere within the Chrome Settings. So, you have to follow the below steps to disable the features of auto-refreshing tabs.
  1. Open ‘Google Chrome’ application.
  2. Click on ‘Address bar.’
  3. Key in or copy and paste this text: “chrome://flags” in the address bar.
  4. Press ‘Enter.’
  5. Find out the flag ‘Automatic tab discarding’ on the left side of the screen. Or copy and paste “chrome://flags/#automatic-tab-discarding” into the address bar.
  6. Select ‘Disable’ under the drop-down menu.
  7. And then Press ‘Relaunch Now’ button.
Now, Chrome will discard tabs or not auto refresh tabs. If you visit any tab after a long time, it will not automatically refresh. This will apply for all tabs. But if you don’t want to apply this feature on the certain tab then, then you can do this.

How to manually discard tabs in Google Chrome

  1. Open ‘Google Chrome’ application.
  2. Click on ‘Address bar.’
  3. Type “chrome://discards/” into the address bar.
  4. Press ‘Enter.’ (This will open the entire list of all tabs that you’ve opened in your Chrome browser).
  5. Now, click ‘Discard’ link on the title of the tab that you want to discard.
The selected discarded tab or the tab which you don’t disable for auto-refreshing will not disappear from open tabs. And when you switch to the tab again after some time, it will load a fresh version of the page.
